Why this project matters
Uganda's forests and wetlands have faced sustained pressure from population growth and agricultural expansion: research tracking villages in western Uganda recorded annual forest loss of around 2.6% in the 2000s, among the highest rates in the world, while government wetland surveys show Eastern Uganda has lost nearly half of its wetlands to farming and settlement. To help combat this, our work with UCFA will help map farmers’ land against deforestation and wetland-conversion and support them in agroforestry system implementation, including trainings in agroforestry and sustainable land management practices.
This project will support UCFA's coffee-cooperative network, spanning all four regions of Uganda (Central, Northern, Eastern, and Western), and working with different ethnic communities—including the Baganda, Basoga, Banyankole, Batooro, Bakonjo, Banyoro, Lango and Acholi. UCFA's equity focus centers on women and youth, who typically have far less access to land titles, credit and leadership roles. Through the Acorn project, UCFA plans to expand their access to planting materials, training and leadership opportunities.
